You should choose the highest level course with a Talent Scout you are capable of reaching for this task.
After you have visited the Pit, the Talent Scout cannot trigger again for one hour. The chance of the Talent Scout noticing you is roughly 1 in 35, and only occurs after completing a successful lap of the course.
The Gorilla Mask is provided on your first successful Pit event, independently of Nimble outfit pieces.
Most of the Pit events are random chance games - Karaoke and Put the Thing in the Other Thing are not, so these are much more likely to succeed.
